Mastering Uncertainty: Elevating Project Success with Model-Based Threat Management Strategies

Abstract:

Inherent in every stage of the product development lifecycle of any complex system is uncertainty, which can have either positive or negative outcomes. These “threats” take the form of possible future events with negative consequences (risks), possible future events with positive consequences (opportunities), and what has already gone wrong (issues). Programs that adopt a “threat management” mindset, as opposed to the more narrowly defined “risk management” mindset, can increase the probability of a greater net positive value to the project. A model-based threat management approach provides additional benefits. Building models that capture risks, opportunities, issues, and their handling mechanisms as entities allows relationships to be established with originating and impacted entities. This enables impact analyses to be performed on not just the system under design, but also its context within the environment as well as the overarching designing system.

This webinar will discuss the need for developing and implementing a comprehensive threat management process as well as the potential consequences of not doing so. It will discuss risk management (and the broader concept of threat management) in the context of how it applies to the system lifecycle process as well as the roles and responsibilities of systems engineers vs. program management and other stakeholders. It will cover the definition of risks, opportunities, and issues, as well as how they are related and can evolve. The risk management process from identification through control will be defined. We will review the model-based threat management capabilities of SysML and Vitech’s Comprehensive Systems Design Language (CSDL) and potential ways to leverage them as part of an integrated digital engineering ecosystem.

What will you learn?

• The three primary pillars of comprehensive threat management and their relationships with one another
• The general threat management lifecycle process from threat identification through control and monitoring
• The threat management modeling capabilities of SysML v1 and Comprehensive Systems Design Language
• Possible approaches to implementing a threat management process in your organization
